A Friends First Day School was set up soon after the Allowed Meeting was formalised in New Earswick in 1917 and had 34 members in 1918, rising to 57 in 1929. Week-end lecture schools were held, addressed by such speakers as J Edward Hodgkin and Edward Grubb, and study circles were held from 1918/19. The school was active until at least 1969. The Society of Friends (or 'Quakers') was formed by George Fox (1624-1691), a shoemaker from Nottingham. In the 1640s Fox travelled throughout England delivering sermons in which he argued that individuals could have direct access to God without the need for churches, priests or other aspects of the established Church.
